The name of the temple was changed to reflect the generosity of Sultan Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim, who donated an acre of land and RM5000 to Mr. Kootha Permal Vandayar.

The exterior design is harmonious and there are two pairs of red hanging lanterns from China outside. It is a 4-story shophouse. The museum had different floors that housed various collections of artifacts and exhibits. This was to preserve the unique history of Chinese immigrants.

The ground floor of the historic building houses valuable records that record Chinese arrivals in Malaysia. The museum displays records that show how the Chinese arrived in Malaysia from China during the Ming Dynasty to trade and do business. The museum also featured information on how the five Chinese dialects, the Hainanese and Hakka, Cantonese, and Teochew, came to Johor Bahru to start their new lives here.

The museum displays many photos, news articles, and suitcases from Chinese immigrants who arrived between the 1800s to 1900s. Visitors can also learn more about World War II history and how the Chinese fought the Japanese during this difficult time.
