The concern that readymade dog foods may be crammed with animal byproducts and synthetic preservatives is very real. Remember the melamine incident that led to the recall of some very popular pet food brands? The incident was further marred by reports of the deaths of several pets due to numerous health issues, led by kidney failure.
Thankfully, that gruesome incident is past us. The good news is that pet parents are more than willing to get some grease on their elbows and cook for their pets. Homemade dog food is back and how.
If you were on the fence about cooking for your pet or were confused about what recipes to try, then here are some wholesome and nutritious dog food recipes that you can whip up in minutes for your pooch.
Peanut Butter Cookies
Dogs will gorge on peanut butter like a whale. Often, vets sneak in doggy meds into peanut butter and the dog unsuspectingly swallows it. So, make some great organic peanut butter cookies and let Fido enjoy some treats when he’s least expecting it.
- Prep time: 15 minutes
- Cooking time: 45 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
Mix a couple of cups of white flour (Wheat is best skipped unless you are absolutely sure that your pooch isn’t allergic to it), approximately 1 cup of rolled oats (optional), half a cup of organic peanut butter (without additives), a tablespoon of organic honey and your favorite brand of fish oil. Add some water and knead the dough until the consistency is soft.
Preheat an oven to 350 degrees.
Create cookie shapes from the dough roll, lay them onto the baking sheet, and bake. These should be done in less than 45 minutes.
Not only do the dogs get some protein, but you also sneak in some fish oil which is great for the coat and for their tiny doggy hearts.
Chicken or Fish Dinner
If you can get fresh free range chicken meat and organic veggies, then you can just chop them up, give it a light toss on the flame and give your dog the raw diet. However, considering that there’s always a possibility of meat being contaminated, it is recommended that you cook it.
- Prep time: 10 minutes
- Cooking time: 30 minutes

All you have to do is boil the chicken in a large pot and when it is almost done, add some chopped fruits and veggies. According to the AKC, Apples top the list of the recommended fruits for dogs. So, you’d definitely want to include it. So are blueberries and oranges. Carrots, Broccoli and spinach are good choices for veggies.
If you want to try a fish diet instead, then swap the chicken for any fish of your choice. Salmon is undoubtedly the best and if you can get it fresh, then your doggy will be delighted. Else, you can use Frozen Tilapia which is readily available.
These are of course, just a couple of homemade dog food recipes. You are limited only by your creativity and some restricted food items like grapes, tomatoes and onions. Else, dogs love homemade food. Happy cooking!
