In terms of population, the state is the seventh least populous but it ranks second in terms of population density. The most populous city in the state is Providence, which is also the state capital.

The state is located in the Appalachian region of Southern United States. The capital of the state is Charleston and it is also the largest city in the state. The highest point of the state is atop Spruce Knob that has a height of 1,482 meters and it is mostly covered by a boreal forest of dense spruce trees. 75% of the total area of Western Virginia is covered with forests. After the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, West Virginia has been declared as the state.
