Most of us avoid weight loss programs, they seem like a drag, and half the time people report them simply not working. It is really quite sad to see. However, the truth is that most people fail at weight loss programs because they choose programs incompatible with them!
You need to find a program that is compatible with you, your tastes, lifestyle, and expectations, and that fulfills your needs. Losing weight should not make you feel sad and miserable, remember?
It is meant to be a happy time. Many of us have found weight loss program reviews and immediately decided to turn our backs on them. We shouldn’t, because one person’s weight loss needs are different from our own.
Sure, consider reviews, but more importantly, know what you are looking for, and what a weight loss program should include for you!
Here are some things to look for…
Start with a medical evaluation
Your journey to weight loss should always start with a visit to your doctor. They can help you create a plan that’s right for your health and fitness level.
During your visit, your doctor will likely:
- Assess your health history
- Conduct a physical exam
- Calculate your body mass index (BMI)
- Take measurements, such as your waist circumference
- Order blood tests, if needed
Based on all of this information, they’ll determine whether you’re a good candidate for a weight loss program. If so, they can also provide referrals to registered dietitians or other professionals who can help you further.
Realistic Expectations
Many of us look to popular schemes… You know, the ones that promise you will lose weight in 30 days, or some other unrealistic time frame. These just are not real, they won’t work, and you’ll be disappointed and put off weight loss programs.
You should be looking for a program that will get you losing a pound a week, or so. Some can lose more weight in the first few weeks, some people may lose more, we are all different after all.
But, set reasonable goals of what you think you could achieve, and then find a weight loss program that will get you as close to that as possible.
Losing weight fast is unrealistic, and doing so at this rate is not healthy nor is it sustainable long term. Thinking it is sustainable will make you frustrated and want to give up.
A Diet For Your Preferences
Weight loss diets usually work in the same way as success. You should not just choose a program because it is good, or has good reviews. Check out the diet plan, is your mouth watering?
You should choose a program that you will actually enjoy! If you like veg, maybe a vegetarian diet will work for you. If you don’t like dairy or meat so much but adore veg, and love unique foods and spices, try vegan.
If you can go ages without eating, fasting might be your ideal choice.
Programs will vary, and those that focus on dietary changes should be chosen based on what you think you can do in the long term. Look at their plans, does it feel reasonable for you? If it doesn’t then don’t choose it, you will only relapse and give up.
Inclusion Of Favorite Foods
Similarly, you should also choose a program that allows you to enjoy your favorite foods. Maybe ice cream is important to you, if so, choose one that lets you have a bowl of ice cream one or two times per week in a small portion.
Half of the weight loss is portion control. Your diet should allow you to enjoy the foods you love, even if it is in less amounts than you would usually have. A diet should not make you miserable.
Eating & Activity Focused
A good weight loss program is about balance. It is not all about diet, part of it is also increasing physical activity.
Exercise helps you to maintain your weight. It can stop you from regaining any weight once you have shed the pounds.
You want to choose a program that will get you into being active as well as changing your diet. One that allows you to choose your form of exercise is also ideal, as you can do whatever exercise you enjoy, be it yoga, walking, horseback riding, water sports, etc.
Tracking
A good program should have you tracking your weight changes and your diet. It should have you tracking your weight like you track your bank balance, and tracking what you eat too, so you know where the calories are coming from, and how to get rid of them.
You can do it traditionally with a pen and paper, or you could use an app on your phone and track it that way.
Support & Accountability
Last of all, whatever program you choose should be there to support you, via video calls, physical talks, phone calls, and so on.
Programs that provide accountability and support for you as you go through the program will have better results. Look for a program that has support and accountability for you in the long term.
Celebrate your successes
When you are trying to lose weight, it is important to stay motivated. One way to stay motivated is to celebrate your successes. Every time you reach a milestone, celebrate it! This can be done by treating yourself to a special meal, buying yourself a new piece of clothing, or simply taking a break from your diet and exercise routine.
Another way to stay motivated is to set smaller goals. Instead of thinking about losing 30 pounds, focus on losing 5 pounds. Once you reach that goal, you can set another goal. By setting smaller goals, you will be able to see your progress and feel good about yourself, which will help you stay motivated.
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself. If you have a bad day or week, don’t give up on your weight loss program. Everyone has setbacks, but it is important to get back on track as soon as possible. If you need some help getting back on track, consider talking to a friend or family member who is also trying to lose weight. Having someone to talk to can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.
