Anyone can point a truck west and drive. The part that actually separates a clean trip from a disaster happens before the engine turns over: the planning. Where you’ll park matters more than how fast you’ll get there

Plan the route, but plan it around parking, not just miles. The American Transportation Research Institute puts hard numbers on a problem every OTR driver already knows in their gut: there is roughly one public truck parking space for every 11 truck drivers nationally, and the average public rest area has just 19 spaces. Southern states average around 25 spaces per rest area; the Northeast averages closer to 15.

The row worth noticing is the West Coast, running nearly a dollar over the Gulf Coast in the same week – a real difference on a 400-gallon fill-up.
