A common issue when traveling or going on a vacation is having someone to take care of your dog, cat, or any other type of pet. But, usually, the solution is simple. You just need to find a friend or a family member that is willing to “adopt” your pet for a week or you could just take it with you. However, many people forget that house plans require maintenance too. Someone needs to take care of them and you will not be able to take them with you.
So, the question is, what do you do with house plants when traveling? It is a tough question, but do not worry, there are several things you could do to keep all of your precious greens alive throughout your entire trip.
To make this so much easier for you, I decided to gather all of the information regarding this topic and provide you with the best solutions to ensure that all of your beautiful flowers will still live while you are not home.
Have someone come over
This is probably the simplest solution to this kind of problem. All you need to do is just find someone that will come over to your home and water all the houseplants. Of course, the person that you pick needs to be someone reliable and trustworthy. Usually, it should be a close friend or a close family member. Someone to which you can entrust the key to your home.
However, before you go on your trip, do not forget to tell them exactly how to take care of your plants. We all know some require daily maintenance while others require none.
Unfortunately, even though this is a simple and easy solution, it is still quite unlikely that you will find someone to help you with your problem. But, there is no need to worry because there are some other solutions with which you will not need to rely on anyone else.
Put them in the bathtub
This might sound like a weird or crazy method, but it is actually very effective and it can be done long-term.
Executing this is quite simple. All you need to do is just fill the bathtub with a few centimeters or inches of water. Not too little, but not too much either. The water level needs to be high enough so your green babies can easily get the water they need. Just make sure that the water does not go over the pot or you will drown them.
Keep in mind, you will need to remove the saucer under the pot for better access to the water. Also, make sure the parts have holes in them.
Do not worry about your succulents
Many people do not have enough free time to take care of their houseplants. It is true that some of them require a lot of maintenance and the perfect conditions to strive. Because of this, most of those people just prefer getting succulents or cacti. They are the perfect solution for those that do not have the time.
They grow on their own, they do not take too much space, they serve the same purpose as any other greens and they do not want any kind of maintenance except a little water now and then as suggested by Succulent Market. So, if you are the type of person that has succulents at home then there really is no need to worry about anything. These little guys can stay healthy for several weeks without getting a drop of water.
In other words, you should just go on your trip and leave your succulents alone. When you come back home they will still be there waiting for you.
The glass bottle trick
This is a very old trick but it is a great solution for houseplants that rely on a daily watering routine. All you need is just one glass bottle and that is about it. Keep in mind, some houseplants could wither from too much water, so make sure that you use this method on the right one.
Now, let us get to it. First, find a glass bottle, preferably with a plastic cap. With a knife, nail, or any other sharp tool, start making several holes on the Itself. To make things easier for yourself, I suggest keeping the cap on the bottle while creating the holes.
Once that is done, dig a hole in the soil of the pot that is just large enough to fit the neck of the bottle. If there is no room, you could try to find something to help the bottle stay vertical. After that, fill the bottle with water, put the cap on, and put it upside down inside of the pot. With this method, the bottle will steadily and surely deliver water for the next several days. If it is a 1 L bottle, it could probably last for five or even six days.
If you are away for a longer period of time, you could just find someone to refill the bottles for you. This is much easier than having someone come over every single day.
Take them to a friend’s house
As I mentioned previously, it is highly unlikely that you will find anyone to visit your home every single day to water your plants. It simply too much to ask. But, there may be an alternative to this. Instead of giving them the keys to your home, it may be a good idea to bring the most demanding plans to their home. This is going to be a much easier solution for both you, your friend, and the plant itself.
Again, make sure that you tell them how to properly take care of the houseplants.
There are probably dozens of other self-watering methods that you can find on the Internet, but I believe that these solutions in this article are the easiest and most realistic ones. I hope that you will find some use of this information the next time you need to go traveling.
