It was discovered in the last decade and mostly seen in the peat swamp forests of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. The small size of the fish helps them to survive extreme drought conditions. Also, it has a partially transparent body and a reduced head skeleton, which leaves the brain completely unprotected by bone. Paedocypris petrogenetic belongs to the carp family and has a similar appearance of larvae. It prefers to live in dark tea-colored waters with an acidity of pH3, which is more than 100 times more acidic than rainwater

Before Paedocypris petrogenetic, the previous record for the smallest fish was held by an 8 mm species of Indo-Pacific goby. Nowadays, these fishes are facing habitat loss because of logging and agriculture.
